Silver-spotted skipper - Hesperia comma
![]() |
Family: Hesperiidae Flight Time: June - Sept. Size: 28-30mm Altitude: 0-2300m |
| A rare species in the UK, confined to just a few localities in the south.
Its preference for short turf, particularly with bare patches, produced by rabbits has
become scarce. The top picture was taken in Provence where as the bottom one was taken at Martin down, a fine nature reserve in Dorset with forty different butterfly species including many rarities. The underside gives the species its name and differentiates it from the superficially similar Large skipper Ochlodes venatus. |
