Niobe fritillary - Argynnis niobe
![]() |
Family: Nymphalidae Flight Time: May - August Size: 46 - 60mm Altitude: 0-2400m |
| These beautiful fritillaries were flying
together, in Switzerland, with the superficially similar Dark-green fritillary, Argynnis
aglaja and High brown fritillary, Argynnis
adippe. The
latter is particularly close in underside markings but a couple of
features help. The forewing is concave, the row of underside silver
markings (postdiscal) is continuous and the silver centered brown spots
are smaller.
They, like many other species, were rather keen to take moisture, especially sweat, like the one pictured left is doing
