The marbled effect on the underside gives this species its
name. The similar Lesser marbled fritillary Brenthis ino is
distinguished by an additional yellow shaded cell on the underside
hindwing.
I noticed this particular specimen as different to the other species flying by the fact that a female was laying eggs on Bramble, rubus species, where as a large number of fritillaries use viola or violet species. |
