Queen of Spain fritillary- Issoria lathonia

Upperside

Family: Nymphalidae

Flight Time: March - October

Size: 38-46mm

Altitude: 0-2700m

Underside Notes:

Both photographs were taken in Brittany in the summer of 1997, the top one in near Redon and the lower on Belle Isle.

The shape of the hindwing is characteristic, as are the large silver spots, see left.

Quite a powerful migrant this species occasionally reaches the UK. There is even evidence of a permanent colony surviving in eastern England.
