Pictured left and above left is the typical form of the Water ringlet, with its deep red band, and silvery hindwing band. The pictures were taken in Ariège where many of these butterflies were settling on bare earth and the tarmac of the road. |

This is a male Water ringlet of the form vergy, it is not a good photo, but is the only one I saw while in Valais. Not surprisingly perhaps it was flying near a stream with a waterfall cascading behind. |
